Artist To Watch: Years & Years

Seems like today the best up-incoming artists are from the United Kingdom. Take acts like Ed Sheeran, Bastille, George Ezra, and Arctic Monkeys for examples. The British are indeed coming.

Winners of BBC Sound of 2015 and MTV Woodie Awards: Artist To Watch, Years & Years is a band you don’t want to miss. The British electronic-pop trio consists of Olly Alexander (center), vocals and keyboardist, Mikey Goldsworthy (right), bassist, and Emre Turkmen (left), synths. Also the addition of live drums, with drummer Dylan Bell (back).

These guys are soulful, unique, and enjoyable. Electronic music has a deeper meaning than just fist pumps. Years and Years are electric, selling out where ever they go. With the release of smooth Traps EP, in 2013, Years & Years have kept impressing. Their later EPs Real, 2014 and Take Shelter, 2014, experimented with their sound a bit, but stayed true and real. (no pun intended.) Then February 2015 came with the Y & Y EP, which includes four songs, “Desire”, “Take Shelter”, “King”, and “Memo”.

Their song “King” sky rocketed to number one in the UK charts. That spunky, feel good song can make your day. Once the beginning beat plays, you’re automatically hooked. This song impresses to shows who Years & Years really are. The US has finally started to notice, adding “King” to the US radio at the start of the summer. They’ve performed at this year’s SXSW, had a mini tour across the US, and had their first US Late Night TV debut with Seth Meyers. If they came with a purpose of gaining new supporters, they got them.

Alexander’s voice is something special. His soft angelic tone delivers more emotion than anyone I’ve heard in a while. It’s breathtaking. It’s beautiful, It’s genuine. He has won the hearts of many which include Ellie Goulding, Katy Perry, Sam Smith, just to name a few. Ellie Goulding states that his “game changing” voice is the best of the best right now. I couldn’t agree more. Combine an authentic voice with heavy, distinct beats, then profound songs will be the outcome.

Years & Years highly anticipated debut album, Communion is released on July 10th. They’ve released two tracks, “Worship” and “Shine”, off Communion to show what they’re made of. These guys are here for the long run, awaiting to dominate the charts. -y
